Snatched-back breath? (Premiere day)
Today is the day that Onyx brass premiere my piece Music for My Stolen Breath. I wrote the piece in a state of desperation - having experienced racism followed by severe silencing by an institution I had thought of as home, I was suffering various trauma symptoms. This piece ended up growing from an exercise I set myself to get off the blank page: dictating the rhythms of my erratic trauma breathing. Today, my feelings from being silenced…get airtime. I think it could feel pretty overwhelming but Onyx are brilliant musicians plus some of the warmest humans around - me and my piece couldn’t be in safer hands.
